Intermittent Interac Debit Chip-and-PIN card purchase declines

Interac wishes to advise you  that there is currently an issue at some merchant locations, as a result of a software update, on their point of sale devices. Unfortunately, this is resulting in cards issued in 2019 (debit & credit) being declined.  

Impacted Merchants/Acquirers (as at this writing): • Canada: Global Payments (Loblaw Brand merchants), Moneris (Costco, La Senza, Victoria Secret/Pink, Bath and Body Works, Esso, Petro Canada) and other small merchants • USA: NYCE network (Walmart, Costco, Shell, McDonalds and other merchants)

experiencing declined point of sale purchases at certain merchant terminals when entering their PIN number. The Credit Union wants to reassure you that there is nothing wrong with our debit cards. The issue is solely with Interac and certain merchant terminals not being updated properly to accommodate new technology built into the debit cards. Interac is actively working with the merchants to correct this issue.

This issue is not just impacting Credit Unions, but also some of the major banks’ debit cards as well. The “tap” feature is not affected, so you are able to tap until you reach a decline at the POS terminal. Unfortunately, if you have reached your cummulative total, you will not beable to reset your card at the affected terminals. If you get declined twice in a row, please do not try a third time as it may block the PIN on your card and you would then have to get your card unblocked by visiting our Branch. ATM transactions are not impacted by this issue and so you can reset your card at a Credit Union ATM.

During this transition, we are recommending you carry a second form of payment as a back-up, such as our Collabria Mastercard credit card or cash.
